Misari Boat Race Park Charknic with Kids | A Honest Family Day with 8 & 5-Year-Old Siblings

Misari Boat Race Park Charknic with Kids | A Honest Family Day with 8 & 5-Year-Old Siblings

💡 TL;DR — Misari Boat Race Park (in Hanam, just outside Seoul) has dedicated 'charknic' zones — pull up your car, open the trunk, and unfold a picnic right there. We went with our 8-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter. Even on a weekend it was uncrowded and felt private. Parking is ₩12,000 flat per day, and the late-April double cherry blossoms (gyeop-beotkkot) were stunning. The catch: amenities (snack bars, restrooms) are far from the charknic area, so pack everything ahead.

The Basics

Misari Boat Race Park charknic — family with car trunk open, pop-up tent and camping chairs on grass
  • Location: Misa-dong, Hanam-si, Gyeonggi-do (inside Misari Boat Race Park grounds)

  • Hours: Park & lawn open 24/7 (some areas restricted on race days)

  • Parking: ₩12,000 flat per day (not hourly — better value the longer you stay)

  • Reservation: None required — first-come, first-served

  • What to pack: chairs, mat, food, drinks, tissues, bikes/toys — amenities are far away

  • Best season: late April–early May (double cherry blossoms) and autumn foliage

The lawn is enormous — you can see Geomdansan mountain in the distance. Even on a weekend, families were spread far apart. Charknic here genuinely feels private.

Charknic Setup

Charknic setup — older brother lying inside open trunk while younger sister snacks on a chair

Charknic spots are organized so you can park right next to grass. Open the trunk, lay down a mat — it instantly becomes a kids' bed. Add a pop-up shade tent and you have two zones: shade in the trunk, sun on the grass.

Our 8-year-old read books in the trunk, then ran out to play, then came back to rest. We rotated between both spots all day.

The view from inside the trunk is genuinely peaceful. Spacing between families is generous, so you don't feel crowded.

Late-April Double Cherry Blossoms

Misari Boat Race Park double cherry blossom path lined with pink trees

We came in late April. Regular cherry blossoms had already fallen, but the double cherry blossoms (gyeop-beotkkot) were in full bloom — much pinker, lusher, and more photogenic. The walking paths are lined with them on both sides.

Up close, the petals are far denser than regular cherry blossoms, and azaleas blooming nearby created a layered pink-magenta backdrop.

How the Kids Reacted

Brother and sister sharing a snack of cherry tomatoes on the picnic mat

We packed a tub of cherry tomatoes, and the kids polished it off — the same tomatoes they refuse at home. Outside, somehow, everything tastes better.

5-year-old girl blowing bubbles on the wide grass field

Our 5-year-old was shy at first, but once she saw how few people were around, she ran circles in the grass blowing bubbles for over half an hour. The lawn is so wide, you stop worrying about her wandering.

Dad and the older brother played badminton; the little sister joined in her own way. With the mountain framing the background, even the random snapshots came out beautifully.

Moments like this make the morning logistics worth it.

Safety & Age Suitability

  • Age 5: lawn is soft enough for falls; bubbles, ball play work great. Watch around parked cars in the charknic zone

  • Age 8: bikes/scooters work well on the long, flat paths. River side has fences

  • Limited natural shade — bring hats, sunscreen, plenty of water

  • Charknic spots are next to roads — keep little ones in sight

Cost Breakdown

  • Parking: ₩12,000 flat per day (~$9, ~₩3,000/person for a family of 4)

  • No entrance or reservation fees

  • BYO food = no food cost; about 1/5 to 1/10 the cost of a kids' café for a full day out

Honest Drawbacks

  • Convenience facilities (cafés, restrooms) are not within easy walking distance from the charknic zone — and packing up the car to drive there is a hassle

  • Pick a bad spot and the restroom may be a 5–10 minute walk away

  • Pack obsessively: food, water, tissues, wet wipes — running out and having to drive out is the worst

  • Some spots have very little natural shade

Pre-Visit Checklist

  • 🍱 Plenty of food, snacks, drinks (amenities are far)

  • 🚻 Locate a restroom before you park

  • 🧺 Mat, camping chairs, folding table, pop-up shade tent

  • 🪁 Bubbles, badminton, bikes, balls — bring it all

  • 🌸 Aim for late April–early May for double cherry blossoms

  • ☀️ Hat, sunscreen, water for low-shade spots

  • 🧻 Tissues, wet wipes, trash bags (BYO)

FAQ

Q. Do I need to reserve a charknic spot?

A. No reservation — first-come, first-served. During cherry blossom season or holidays, arriving in the morning gives you the best spots.

Q. How much is parking?

A. ₩12,000 flat per day. Not hourly — the longer you stay, the better the value. About ₩3,000 per person for a family of 4.

Q. Are restrooms and snack bars close by?

A. Honestly, not really. Depending on your spot, it can be a 5–10 minute walk, and packing up the car to drive over is annoying. Locate the nearest restroom before settling in, and bring all food, water, tissues, and wet wipes with you.

Q. Is it suitable for a 5-year-old?

A. Absolutely. Our 5-year-old played all day with bubbles and snacks. The lawn is soft, and the open space makes it easy to keep her in sight. Just bring shade gear for hot midday hours.

Q. When are the double cherry blossoms in bloom?

A. Peak is usually late April through early May — after regular cherry blossoms fade. The color is deeper and the petals are denser, so they photograph beautifully.
